FaceBook – hiding newsfeed from friends, youville, petville…

Tired of getting constant updates from friends on FaceBook that post every activity they do?

You can turn on/off display of such updates (click for FaceBook HELP link on this topic):

  1. First, go to your FaceBook HOME page by either clicking on the FB icon on top left of the page.  You should now see ‘News feed’ in the left column.
  2. Move your cursor down to the culprit/friend with the offending updates.  WATCH YOUR SCREEN CAREFULLY – as you move your cursor to the text of the title of their update, to the right of title a button called ‘Hide’ with a drop down arrow will show up.  When you click on that button, a text box with ‘Hide [friend name or petville or youville or 'application']‘ will appear below their status update.  Click on it and their stories will no long show up until you decide to UNHIDE them.

To UNHIDE the application is a bit tricky.  Do step #1 again and towards the right part of the screen, there will be two options that read ‘Top News’ and ‘Most Recent.’  Click on ‘Top News’ and this time, scroll to the very bottom of the page – this may be a long scroll down depending on how many posts are displayed (number of friends displayed can be adjusted and default as of April 1, 2010 is set to 250) so, keep going.  The second to the last line will say ‘Older posts’ and ‘Edit options.’  When you click on the Edit options, a window will popup that shows unhiding options for friends (friends option will not show if you have not hidden any friend updates) as well as the applications you have hidden.  Unhide the news feeds you want.  (click for FaceBook HELP link on this topic).

zoho.com

Besides Google services, check out zoho.com as an example of cloud computing.  Zoho offers quite a few applications at no cost.  One tip – if you use zoho sheet application, to enter a formula, start with the equal ‘=’ sign.

Alternate Browsers

  • Navigator (Netscape) – now discontinued.  Stable and compatible regardless of web site format
  • Firefox – www.firefox.com – especially with ‘Speed Dial’ and ‘Google Toolbar’ add-ins
  • Opera – www.opera.com – classy, requires intuition & intellect to use it.  If you can think of a possibility, chances are that opera has that feature
  • Safari – www.apple.com/safari/ – ‘Google Toolbar’ does not work with it.
  • Chrome – www.google.com/chrome/?hl=en
